Doan Mountain

Having read fellow Northern Ireland landscape photographer Alistair Hamill’s experiences climbing Doan Mountain I thought it high time that we ventured up ourselves. We took the recommended trek from Ott carpark through to the Mourne wall and then over the softer ground on to Doan, the paths are somewhat limited at times so we were reliant on our directions and the Viewranger app to get us to the top.

By Mourne standards it’s a reasonably plain walk from Ott carpark up to the famous Mourne Wall but on reaching the Ott stile the view offered unexpected ‘Wow’ factor with the tors of Slieve Bernagh and Doan sitting high above the valley and Lough Shanna / Lough Shannagh.

The sun was low and the rolling clouds created a cinematic feel and some amazing shadows over the summits. There are some very marshy stages to this walk so it is definitely worth taking a change of clothes if you plan to go out anywhere after your hike.

View from Doan Mountain

Having ventured through the Mournes in all directions this was my first time up the massively undervalued Doan Mountain. The views at the top are amazing and it offers 360 degree views of the famous mountain range.

I was out with the X100T, the X-T1 with the 16mm lens and naturally my Lee Filters Seven5 system. I now carry one of the over-the-shoulder Lee Filter Seven5 carry cases and I have say the case makes using the filters in the wild weather of the mountains so much easier, no more juggling filters as they all sit nicely in their little envelopes within the case.

If you use the Seven5 system the carry case is well worth taking a look at and I find it is also a great place to store my memory cards (and my lens cap) when out in the hills.

Doan is a stunning mountain, if you can’t venture as far as the top I found the vista of Bernagh and Doan from the Mourne wall utterly breathtaking.

Please note that details of hikes are provided for information only and are used at your own risk. If you are venturing out into the mountains make sure you are properly equipped for walking in the hills and are prepared for sudden changes in weather. Knowing how to navigate is a key skill for rough mountain walking.
