Herb Ritts
Herb Ritts’s “Madonna, Tokyo,” 1987;
Ritts’s gift was his uncanny ability to elevate fashion photography to the level of high art. The more discerning exhibitions of his work make it clear that even his commercial imagery was not so much about models and personalities as it was studies in light, contrast, and composition. Ritts also had a funny side. This show, partly derived from an earlier MFA exhibit when the black-and-white master was alive, focuses on the artistry and wit of his most enduring portraits.
