This Concept Camera Won’t Let You Take Boring Photos

Camera Restricta won't take cliche photos

When traveling, there are often certain spots that are magnetic for photographers. As a result, photos from that area can start to feel stale or repetitive. Photographer and artist Philipp Schmitt has come up with an art project concept camera called Camera Restricta, which tries to keep things fresh by restricting photos in over shot areas.

The camera uses GPS tracking and an internet connection to keep track of its location on earth. It also monitors geo-tagged images online to find out how many photos have been taken in the surrounding area. If too many photos have been taken within a roughly 35-meter radius, the camera will display a red X across the viewfinder and prevent the picture from being taken.

If you think about the idea too literally, it’s a bit contradictory. The idea is to encourage people to try and take original photographs, but locks them out based purely on location. Still, the overall theme is to prod people to think differently before snapping that postcard shot you can already see everywhere on the web.
