Winter Sun on Doan Mountain

Over Christmas we took the annual trip into the Mourne Mountains, a short climb to the top of Doan Mountain in the heart of the central Mournes. Climbing Doan sees a hike through some pretty soft ground so it can be messy at times but the views are definitely worth it. The total walk is about 7km and an elevation of just under 600m, the whole walk (return) can be completed in less than three hours.

Doan Mountain

I have made this hike on a quite a few occasions, it is a quick walk and offers some really amazing photographic opportunities and an amazing 360-degree view of the mountain range.

I packed my newly purchased Fujifilm X-T2 and the trusty 16-55mm lens which is perfect when going between capturing the ‘wides’ of the landscapes and the telephoto group shots at the top of the mountain.

The Mourne Mountains

It was a hazy, sunny day, uncharacteristic for this time of year. Normally when approaching Doan in the middle of winter there is snow at the top, this year it was just reasonably warm sun.

The late afternoon sun combined with the haze offers some great photographic opportunities and the X-T2, much like the X-Pro2 is a reliable performer. Doan Mountain is where I took my pre-production Fujifilm X-Pro2 in November 2015 and I captured the winter snow but it was the warm winter sunset that really makes this area something very special.

The hike to the top of Doan Mountain on a winter’s afternoon is hard to beat, just remember to take all the necessary precautions when walking in the Mountains.
