Something really BIG is coming Tuesday for photographers, and we’re all over it!

OK, for us, things don’t get much bigger than this — now, unfortunately I can’t tell you actually what it is that’s coming Tuesday, but it’s SO BIG that we’re doing FOUR free live Webcasts on Tuesday and you’re invited (if you’re a photographer, you’re going to want to be there to see and talk about this big secret thingy).

Here’s the top secret details:

Who: Me and RC (co-hosts of The Lightroom Show)

What: Four free LIVE webcasts for photographers

Where: http://ift.tt/1ImDN3D

When: Tuesday at 9:00 am, 11:00 am, 1:00 pm and 3:00 PM (all Eastern Time zone)

Why: We can’t tell you why yet (we’ve been double-sworn to secrecy and we had to put RC’s car up for collateral in case we blabbed so we’re keeping this one top secret till then)

Also, can you help us spread the word through your social media and blogs and stuff? (much appreciated!). We’ve got a LOT to share (ya know, once we can officially share it). :)

Have a great top-secret weekend and we’ll see you next week!

Best,

Our Friend and Instructor Cliff Mautner Wins the WPPI Grand Award for Photojournalism For The 2nd Time!

A big congrats from everybody here to KelbyOne instructor Cliff Mautner who not only took the 1st place at in WPPI’s annual 16×20″ print competition, but he also won 1st place for wedding photojournalism, AND the Grand Award for photojournalism (this was his 2nd time running the Grand Award by the way) at the awards ceremony held on March 4th at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.

There were more than 3200 images entered from around the globe in various categories, which is fairly awesome unto itself, but while Cliff was there he also received the title of “Double Master of WPPI” with his accumulation of points in this competition. To view a video (and while you’re there, check out Cliff’s Lighting and Skillset Bootcamp, and also check out his new online classes on KelbyOne filmed on location during an actual wedding (it’s a two-part series).

About Cliff’s award-winning photo, above (in Cliff’s words):

“In many traditional weddings when a bride prepares for her wedding at her home, it’s common for them to have her father waiting for her at the bottom of the stairs. I had concerns about my ability to capture this moment because of the lack of space between the steps and the front door. I decided to shoot this from inside the living room- thereby using a frame within a frame. I take great pride in never staging a moment like this, and it’s rare that all of the elements fall into place the way this did. Her twin sisters followed her down the stairs along with her niece, and her dad, normally a stoic man, was really overcome with emotion. The three ladies were a bit stunned at dad’s reaction, and I was able to fire off one single frame with this composition. Those judging the image compared it to a Norman Rockwell illustration that depicted an American wedding. This happened so fast, yet I thought I’d made something pretty special at the time, but I wasn’t sure until I went back and chimped on the LCD a few moments later. One frame-one decisive moment, and it was gone. The only thing I did was put myself in the right place at the right time, and the rest was all about my client. I called and thanked them for handing me this moment, because in the end, we’re only as good as our clients!”

Please join me in congratulating Cliff on these amazing accomplishments, and my personal thanks to him for his willingness to share the techniques that have made him a celebrated award-winning photographer with all of us. :)

Check Out This “Behind The Scenes” Tour Of the KelbyOne Headquarters

http://ift.tt/18R8x0n

That video above is a public sneak-peek of a new Webcast created exclusively for KelbyOne members called “Backstage Pass” and it’s produced and hosted by our own Mia McCormick. In this first episode, she takes you on a rollerblade tour of our expanded KelbyOne HQ and she meets up the “Photoshop Guys” along the way, including a stop by my office for a quick chat.

Anyway, since it has this behind-the-scenes tour in it, we thought we’d make just this first one available to the public, and I hope you enjoy Mia’s “rolling review.” ;-)

I’m in Dubai today, and as you might imagine I’m very excited about tonight’s Awards Ceremony and I’ll be posting photos from the event (taken by Brad) over on my Facebook page, so stop by there if you get a chance (btw: Dubai is nine hours ahead and the ceremony is at 7:00 pm, so by 10:00 New York time the awards ceremony will be starting.

Hope you all have a fantabulous Monday!

Best,

-Scott

It’s “I’ve Got Nothing” Tuesday

It’s Tuesday — and I’ve got nuthin’. Nuthin’! Well, not exactly nuthin — because here’s a photo of Brad with his beard in full bloom posing in front of a VW Jetta rental car. That’s something, right? It’s something (wait for it…wait for it…) epic!

I’m at Adobe HQ all day today for a bunch of meetings, so I’m looking forward to seeing a lot of friends here, but outside of that, I’ve got nuthin’ and I’m heading to bed, so check back tomorrow for Guest Blog Wednesday, which, no matter who it is and no matter what the topic, it has to be better than “I’ve Got Nuthin’” Tuesday.

Have a good one!

-Scott

He’s got nuthin’

P.S. Thanks to everybody who came out to my Sacramento seminar yesterday. Awesome crowd and a perfect way to wrap up my tour.

Today My Blog is Dedicated To My Publisher and Dear Friend, Nancy Aldrich-Ruenzel

Last week I heard the news that my long-time friend Nancy Aldrich-Ruenzel was retiring from her post as Publisher at Peachpit Press, the company that for as long as I can remember, has published all my books. For many years Nancy had led a team of some of the most creative, passionate, and talented people in modern book publishing history, and she and her team gave flight to an unparalleled body of work from some of the greatest educators of graphics, art and design of our time.

I’m dedicating my blog today to Nancy as my way of saying thanks for never compromising, for always striving to do what’s right by the reader, and for taking so many chances with my crazy book ideas over the years.

One of the things I loved most about working with Nancy was her love of the art of making books. It was just wired into her DNA, and she got such joy from the entire process, from the first inklings of an idea, to watching it mature and grow through the writing process and production journey, to overseeing it every step of the way as it moved through this cycle to the final printed book. Her passion and commitment to “just making great books” made being one of her authors something very special and something that I’ll dearly miss as she moves onto this next phase of her life.

Nancy is a true pioneer in this industry, and her vision for educational books for creative people really made a difference in so many people’s lives and careers and won her the respect and admiration of both her peers and her competitors alike. It’s hard for me to imagine Nancy not steering the ship, as we’ve worked together so closely over the years, and her wisdom, humor, and drive will be missed by everyone that’s ever worked with her.

She left Peachpit in very capable hands without a doubt, with a wonderful team she put together who will continue her legacy and continue making great books for many years to come, but I’ll always miss our heartfelt talks about the industry, the future of publishing and content creation, the evolution of education, and which restaurant we have to check out next time I’m in San Francisco.

Beyond her gift for publishing and the business side of things, Nancy is just an awesome, down-to-earth, fun person to be around, and even more importantly, she’s a sincerely good person who genuinely wants to the best for those around her, and that’s about the greatest compliment I could pay anyone.

I’ll be forever grateful to Nancy for all her guidance, her insights, and her friendship these many years, and I wish her and her wonderful family all the joys and quality time the gift of retirement can bring.

Thank you, Nancy. It’s truly been an honor to be one of your authors, and even though you’ll be watching from the sidelines from here on out, I’ll still be out there trying to write books that would make you proud.

Much love and lots of hugs,

-Scott, Kalebra, and all your friends and fans here at KelbyOne

Celebrating Photoshop’s 25th Anniversary

It’s hard to believe, but Photoshop is 25-years-old! Yesterday was its official birthday, and yesterday in honor of, and to celebrate, “The Photoshop Guys” did a special broadcast about Photoshop, and we shared some tips and techniques, and you can watch it right above.

You’re Invited!

25 years is a pretty amazing milestone, so to continue the celebration we’re hosting a free Webcast where we’re going to look through the years at the different versions of Photoshop, and we’re going to share our favorite features introduced in each version by sharing our favorite Photoshop tips for each feature (and I’m hoping that last sentence made any sense whatsoever). In short — wanna come to a free live webcast packed with Photoshop tips? We’ll, you’re invited.

When you sign up for the free Webcast, you also get a link to download a PDF our 25-year-tribute feature from Photoshop User magazine written by Adobe’s own Bryan O’Neal Hughes. Here’s the link to sign up.

One more thing!

Adobe’s Worldwide Evangelist Terry White did a really cool tribute for Photoshop’s birthday yesterday; he did an entire demo of Photoshop 1.0. You will be amazed at how many things were in that initial release that we still use day in/day out today. I’ve embedded his demo below.

I hope you’ll join me in wishing Photoshop, the coolest program every made, a big “Happy Birthday!” :)

Hope you all have a great weekend (try to stay warm. If it was 28° down here last night in Tampa, I can’t imagine how cold it must be up north. Brrrrrrrr!).

All my best,

-Scott

It’s Guest Blog Wednesday featuring David Molnar!

I’ve been afraid to admit this for a while… afraid to say this out loud.

But this is a safe place right?

For years I felt like a fake. I would be so nervous the night before a shoot that I felt like tomorrow was the day that I was going to come undone.

Tomorrow the world will discover that I’m faking this. I’m not really a good photographer. They really shouldn’t pay me for this. I’m not worth anything.

I’m pretending to know what I’m doing. When really, I’m scared as hell.

You may or may not know this, but I’m a celebrity, music and advertising photographer in Nashville. I make most of my living shooting album covers for musicians and photographing advertising campaigns for companies like Pepsi, March of Dimes and Cracker Barrel.

But I owe all of my clients an apology.

A few years ago I had some big breaks. I shot an album cover for a band that sold over a million copies. I probably copied an idea from someone else or slightly altered someone else’s style and claimed it as my own. Regardless, I was the new hot thing in Nashville for a minute or two.

After a few more successes and working my butt off trying to take amazing photos… I realized I could just keep doing what I was doing. I found a couple of things that worked. Like shooting on a white backdrop and a specific lighting set-up that would look killer every time. It became my “old faithful.” I became more confident in my craft… or at least a few of my tricks.

I didn’t want to feel insecure anymore or worry that I’d be discovered as faking it, so I started playing it safe. We’ve probably all experienced this right?

I found myself saying by default, “How about we shoot that band on a white seamless backdrop. That would be cool and original!” Even though I’d already done it a hundred times.

If you’ve been shooting for a while, I bet you can relate to having a specific set-up that you know will work. Maybe you shot a killer senior portrait session in your secret location, or a bride in a beautiful backlit garden, and you kept replicating your past successes.

No one knew it wasn’t your best. But you knew. You knew it was only a copy of your previous best.

Sometimes early success is not good for you (or at least me). We turn to coasting on the momentum we luckily gained from a big break.

I’ve heard it said, “If you’re not growing, you’re dying.

Well, here’s my confession:

I’ve been stale. I’ve been coasting. I’ve been lieing to you. Cheating my clients.

I told the artist, I loved the idea. I told my clients this was my best work, I told you… well, what you wanted to hear. I didn’t want to be vulnerable, I didn’t want put myself out there again, I wanted to be comfortable. Frankly, I wanted stay on my couch where it is warm and cozy.

PLEASE STOP THE MUSIC.

The world needs your art. It needs all you have. It doesn’t need my half-assed effort anymore. It needs my best. It needs me to push limits. To do things that scare me.

DON’T WITHHOLD YOUR BEST. If you’re not absolutely spent after a shoot… you’ve cheated the world.

I’ve had a few moments of being shaken back to reality in the past few years… but then I fall back into the same creative rut or safe zones.

Until recently, I hadn’t done any test shoots for myself in the last 3 years. I hadn’t gone out and tried something new. In contrast, my first couple of years, I was shooting every chance I could to build my portfolio, to learn, and sometimes just to create something beautiful.

Everything I’ve been doing recently has been from techniques that I learned years ago… and I kept doing the same things over and over.

Maybe for you, you need to stop shooting the same backlit portraits at the same location over and over shooting at f/2 to get that same super shallow depth of field. I need to stop shooting on the same white seamless background.

PUSH YOURSELF.

I love Jon Foreman’s lyric in the Switchfoot song: “This is your life. Are you who you want to be?”

I’ve been in a creative rut. I’ve been doing the same old things over and over… because they are safe and I know they work.

But that’s lame. I’ve been a coward.

I dare you to join me. I dare you to get uncomfortable. Let’s push the limits.

I dare you to risk being discovered as a fake… again.

You can see more of David’s work at DavidMolnar.com, and follow him on Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook.
